Character by character
peace, safety
great waves, expansive water
Why it works
安澜 is a two-character name that reads as calm water with depth. 安 means peace or safety; 澜 means great waves. Together they suggest a person who is steady on the surface but has real movement and scale underneath.
The name has a classical anchor: in the Mengzi (孟子·盡心上), the phrase 觀水有術,必觀其瀾 — “there is a method in looking at water: look at its waves” — uses 瀾 to talk about the visible expression of something deep. That is a strong image for a name, and it gives you something concrete to say when people ask what it means.
As a sound, Ān Lán is soft and open. It keeps the “An” of Anna without simply transliterating the English name. The first tone on 安 is steady; the second tone on 澜 rises. English speakers may flatten the second tone, so practice the rise. If you use 安 as a surname, the full name is 安澜; if you use 安 as the first character of a given name, the same characters still read naturally.
Sound
The pinyin is Ān Lán. Say it slowly, then at normal speed. If a tone feels difficult, practice the syllable alone before putting the full name together. A Chinese speaker will usually understand an imperfect tone in context, but the closer you get, the more natural the name feels.
How to introduce it
“My Chinese name is 安澜. 安 — peace, safety; 澜 — great waves, expansive water.”
